Just south of Bennett, Colo., lies Ambrosia Farm, a 35-acre prairie home to the Godsey family, lots of chickens, turkeys, and goats, and a handful of farm cats and dogs. Although the sweeping farmland is treeless, native wildlife, including antelope, deer, and rattlesnakes, is abundant. “The wind never stops blowing and the sun is hot and dry,” says owner Christine Godsey, “It’s the perfect place to raise dry land birds.” For the last several years as part of the Eastern Plains Natural Food Co-op, the Godseys have been raising heritage-breed chickens and turkeys. Did you know that at 50 of Denver’s elementary schools, more than 90% of students rely on federally funded meals? Many of these children, ages 3 to 12, eat lunch on Friday and may not eat until they return to school Monday morning. “That fact brought us to our knees,” says Food for Thought co-founder Bob Bell. “We could not believe that was happening in our backyard.” In 2012, Bell joined forces with fellow Rotary Club member John Thielen to start this  grassroots organization with a volunteer staff that packs and distributes Powersacks, grocery bags filled with staples like peanut butter, pasta, and energy bars, to kids in need.
