You’ve known since you handed your mom a construction paper heart stuck with glued macaroni that a homemade gift touches someone in a way that a store-bought item can’t. Make that DIY gift from food that’s tastier than spray-painted pasta, and you’ll please even the pickiest person on your list. We rounded up festive foods that are easy to throw together on a busy weeknight but impressive when packaged in pretty jars decked with boughs of holly and curls of ribbons. We’ve been dreaming of a green Christmas, so we repurposed recycled jelly jars and trash-bound boxes that were made instantly merry by kids’ drawings. Then we filled every empty container in the house with these sweet and savory treats.

Meet the Bakers at Bobolink

What do an English sea captain from the 1700s and a blackbird have to do with local, delicious handcrafted bread? Well that seafaring fellow, John Duckworth, settled 185 acres of farmland along the Delaware in Milford, NJ, back in the 18th century that’s now home to Bobolink Dairy and Bakehouse. Duckworth’s family sold the farm in 1899 to the Stamet family who worked the land for more than 100 years before passing the chain of command to Nina and Jonathan White in 2010. The Whites own and operate Bobolink on what is now state-preserved farmland. And that black songbird is also known as a Bobolink, a frequent flying visitor to the farm’s pastures.
