I Can’t Believe It’s Not Scrapple!

If you grew up in Pennsylvania or South Jersey, chances are you can recall the smell of slices of scrapple sizzling on a diner’s grill. Or maybe your mom served it up on Sunday mornings with a side of eggs? These days, you’re eating less meat and processed food, but I bet you wish you could still fry up this local Pennsylvania Dutch delicacy made from pork, cornmeal, and spices. Well, have we got a gourmet vegan version for you! Even better: It’s made by a local chef with local ingredients, too. Will Ternay started cooking in restaurants when he was only 16 years old, landing a gig at La Fourchette in Wayne, Pennsylvania. He then attended the prestigious Culinary Institute […]

The Road to Vera Pasta

Joe D'andrea holding fresh pasta

Joe D’Andrea begins kneading the pasta dough for his lobster bisque ravioli. It’s the start of a long process, but when the cooked ravioli’s flavors explode upon first bite, it’s evident that it’s worth each painstaking step. It’s been a long road to Vera Pasta, the artisan pasta company he founded in West Chester, Pa., in 2012 . After graduating from West Chester University and pursuing a career in finance, he ditched that life to travel to Italy in 2011 and study under renowned Chef Nunzio Spagnuolo at the International School of Italian Cuisine. Today, Joe enjoys sharing the artisan skills he learned with his local community—and offering local folks the opportunity to taste fresh, authentic Italian pasta. That’s why […]

Since 1835, Central New Yorkers have had it easy when it comes to choosing what kind of turkey to serve to loved ones on Thanksgiving. Right in their own backyard in Lysander, NY, Plainville Farms has long been humanely raising turkeys the old-fashioned way—eating vegetarian feed (but never antibiotics) in open, well ventilated buildings that allow the turkeys to roam to their hearts’ content. In 2007, the family-owned turkey farm and processor was sold to a division of Hain Celestial Group and operations have expanded to include other nearby family-run farms. Still, Plainview turkeys all are raised according to the same strict humane-treatment guidelines. Groups such as the Global Animal Partnership regularly visit to do third-party audits, verifying the farms’ […]

Sweet Note Bakery Bagels on Trays

At 5 a.m., while most of us are still snoozing, the self-dubbed “crazy bagel ladies” are busy boiling and baking at Sweet Note Bakery in the historic Philadelphia neighborhood of Manayunk. In fact, this tight-knit team is far from crazy. They’re just passionate about baking up fresh, locally made delicious bagels that aren’t just gluten-free—but also 100% vegan, dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free and non-GMO. That’s quite the mouthful (pun definitely intended), but the ladies at Sweet Note Bakery believe everyone, no matter their allergy or diet preference, should be able to enjoy a delicious bagel. With a lifelong passion for baking, founder and president Michelle MacDonald was inspired to start Sweet Note in 2012, after her grandfather and sister were diagnosed with celiac […]
